Testimonial 03: Neill
1. Why did you choose Tsukasa Taiko?
Years ago, I saw Tsukasa leader Hide Yoshihashi perform; I was mesmerized. I thought, “I want to do that!” Also, as I researched further, I was impressed that Tsukasa was integrated closely with the Japanese American community in Chicago.
2. Please share your most memorable Tsukasa moment.
As a musician and composer, my time with Tsukasa inspired me to look deeper into my own musical background and develop myself as a musician. A very memorable moment for me was when I firmly decided to pursue music composition as a career… the actual moment I committed to this decision was following a great rehearsal session with other Tsukasa members. Ultimately, the many hours I had spent with Tsukasa had shaped my passion for musicianship, and helped motivate this direction in my artistic life. And I will always be thankful to Tsukasa for this.
3. What do you look forward to doing with Tsukasa in the future?
I look forward to continuing to learn and grow musically with Tsukasa. I also look forward to future collaborations, such as the collaboration with the Chicago Composers Orchestra, for which myself and others are writing new works commissioned for Tsukasa. I think innovative artistic collaborations like these really set Tsukasa apart and show how Tsukasa is committed to the Chicago community and to the legacy, advancement and exploration of the taiko artform.
